Glaucoma Screening and Diagnosis

The Ashland Animal Hospital is now offering glaucoma screening. Glaucoma is a sight threatening eye disease caused by increased pressure within the eye. Certain breeds of dogs and cats are pre-disposed to glaucoma. We measure the intra-ocular pressure using an instrument called a Tonopen. The Tonopen can painlessly and accurately measure intracular pressure. We recommend that all pets over 7 years of age or any any pet on the list of breeds at risk of developing glaucoma be screened. Glaucoma is a true emergency. Any pet displaying signs of red, painful, or swollen eyes should be seen immediately. Early intervention is the key to successful treatment.
